With only on barrel produced, our 2017 Special Family Reserve represents the absolute finest fruit from Meteor Vineyard. Hand selected by the row and cluster from a rock strewn section planted to Clone 7 on Saint George rootstock, barrel aged in 100% new French oak for 22 months and then bottle aged for an additional year prior to release. Aromas of black tea, chocolate/mocha and red peppercorns surround a core of blackberries, red currants and cassis. Densely packed aromas reverse on the palate, opening to a mouthwatering expression of bright red fruit. The wine is rich and concentrated with firm, velvety tannins ending in a long warm spice driven finish. Though absolutely gorgeous now, this wine will age gracefully in the cellar. Original Wood Box.

FROM THE CRITIC ANTONIO GALLONI - VINOUS
The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Family Reserve is fabulous. Rich and inky in the glass with tremendous concentration, the Family Reserve is also one of the most opulent 2017s readers will come across. Blackberry jam, cloves, menthol, licorice, new leather, cedar and grilled herbs all add layers of complexity, but the 2017 is really a wine of opulence above all else.

FROM THE WINEMAKER DAWNINE DYER
Still young but showing great promise, our 2017 Special Family Reserve stands out for its remarkable finesse. On the palate it features dark chocolate notes laced with black cherries, sweet tobacco, and a hint of coffee. A wine of great complexity with a texture that is dense yet silky, rich and chewy, with an episodic heat of pink peppercorns that brings focus. A true wine for the ages.

FROM THE VINEYARD MANAGER MIKE WOLF
2017 was a year of extremes. The 5 year drought ended with the wettest January in California since 1998. April remained cool, but as temperatures rose in May, we experienced rapid vine growth, creating challenges in managing the vine canopies. On June 11th, the valley was visited by an intense low pressure system, dropping temperatures by 20 degrees and producing significant amounts of hail. Fortunately, Meteor was spared any significant damage. From July through September we experienced what seemed like an unending series of heat events. The good news was that the stress on the vines produced by the heat helped to keep berry size small, and strong, well positioned canopies helped to protect the fruit.

FROM THE ESTATE DIRECTOR ERIC SMITH
A standout wine from a roller coaster of vintage, this single clone shines a spotlight on what this vineyard can really produce. A singular expression of Cabernet, the Special Family Reserve shows the exotic spice, rich chocolate notes, and dark red fruit this special patch of land in Coombsville can yield. As our vines age, the wines become more and more approachable on release, and while this truly is a wine that will age for decades, a good hour + decant will give you a decadent and exciting preview of what is to come.
