From the Vineyard- "Winter rains continued well into the spring pushing back budbreak and delaying fruit set. What started late, continued slow with cooler than normal temperatures and greater cloud cover through veraison. With threats of a late season and mildew pressure high, thinning and canopy management to promote airflow was an ongoing activity during much of the growing season. Veraison finished mid-August and with it a return to normal temperatures. Ripening progressed well and harvest began on October 14 just ahead of fall rains. The crop was light and maturity was even." - Mike Wolf, Vineyard Manager
From the Winemaker- "The 2010 Special Family Resere displays aromas of black tea, chocolate/mocha and black licorice surround a core of blackberries, red currants and cassis. Densely packed aromas reverse on the palate, opening to a mouthwatering expression of bright red fruit. The wine is rich and concentrated with firm, velvety tannins ending in a long warm spice driven finish. Though absolutely gorgeous now, this wine will age gracefully in the cellar. " - Dawnine Dyer, Winemaker and Partner
From the Sommelier- "The long cool growing season in 2010 produced wines of incredible depth and structure. Some winemakers in the valley expressed tremendous frustration in the beginning of August as cloud cover continued to slow the pace of ripening. Others, Meteor Vineyard included, reveled in the opportunity for slow flavor development and robust structure. These wines will benefit from time in the cellar." - Jason Alexander, General Manager and Sommelier
From the Critics- “Good dark ruby-red. Very pure aromas of cassis, violet, licorice and minerals. Powerful and primary, with a strong mineral quality to the rich, sweet dark berry flavors. Easier to taste today than the Perseid owing to its sheer lushness and sweetness. But very powerful for this bottling. The clone 7 is the source of the minerality in this wine, notes winemaker Dyer. A great California cabernet in the making.” - Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar
“Once again, the estate's 2010 Special Family Reserve stands out for its breadth and volume. At the same time, it also hasn't spent additional time in barrel it will eventually, so the flavor profile is actually quite similar to the Perseid at this juncture. That is a fancy way of saying the two wines aren't as different today as they are likely to be in another year. Black cherries, menthol, licorice, mint, white flowers and spices all flow through to the textured, polished finish. Anticipated maturity 2015-2025.” - Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate
